A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
