Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
