The artist has given the full amount of his £25k honor winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the UK's small live music spots.

Fender was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was named the best record of the last 12 months.

He has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these venues have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, major artists like the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its efforts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported locations that were facing possible closure due to difficulties stemming from floods, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted funding support in modernizing facilities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and audiences.

"The concept that money from shows in major spaces backs the local stages, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has said.

He is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

In they earned the trophy in the year 1996 for their release the album, frontman the singer stated that the group would give their prize money to the organization War Child.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," the artist shared with outlets.

Two years ago, they donated their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their band, as well as other independent music bodies.

Also winners that year they donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was ample," said vocalist Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT announced it had rescued a couple of local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in that area and The Croft in that location were purchased under the community ownership scheme, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
