The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.
"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
