In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
